Women's Day is the day of celebration of the planet which held on 8th March every year. Celebrating this day is an honor and privilege to appreciate the commendable contribution of women to our society. This special day brings an opportunity for all of us to salute the women for their enormous benevolence.

'Woman' is not just a word to use in stories, it is not just an image that comes in our minds, 'Woman' is a word which associates with a lot of emotions such as selfless love, caring, nurturing and the most important sacrifice. A woman cannot be described in words. To know the essence of a woman somebody needs to be a woman. A woman is beyond any definition. A woman plays all the roles, as a caring mother, as a loving sister, as a responsible wife, as an obedient daughter and so on so forth.

Women before and now

In spite of being active in all the stages of society, women were deprived of all due respects. Women in the past had all the strengths and abilities to bring the change in society. History has depicted the power of women through their fights against all the odds and emerged as winners. History is stuffed with abundant examples of heroic women like Lakshmibai, Hellen Keller and so on.

The scenario has drastically changed in recent time. Women are much more empowered and know their rights. The society also recognized their ability and strength in society. The society now welcomes the women in all the areas and not only that society encourages women empowerment. Now women are in all fields like education, healthcare, and all the professional areas. In the modern era, women are on the paths with men, with equal dignity and honor. Let us know the great women of India who have created stories of glory for the country.

Rani Lakshmibai 
Rani Lakshmibai is the name of inspiration for all the women in India. Rani Lakshmibai was a heroic queen of the of Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh. Her remarkable resistance against British Raj found an important place in Indian History. Her role during the Indian Rebellion of 1957 is a story of courage for every woman in India. Soon after the death of her husband, Maharaja Raja Gangadhar Rao
Newalkar, the then British Governor General of India Lord Dalhousie did not accept Maharaja's adopted son as his heir, and conquered Jhansi according to their policy of the 'Doctrine of lapse'. Lakshmibai revolted against the British and assembled her forces which joined the Indian Rebellion of 1857. She fought an intense battle with the British and died in Kotah ki Serai, near Gwalior.

Indira Gandhi


Indira Gandhi, a leader, was born on 19th November 1917. Being the daughter of the famous politician and the first Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi inherited the legacy as 'statesman'. She was popularly known as the Iron Lady of India. Her wise sense of politics had made her an exceptional leader. She was the first woman Prime Minister of India. She had got the teacher of politics in the form of her father Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Soon after her father's death, she became the most important figure of the Indian National Congress party. During her tenure as Prime Minister, India had gained the central attraction in South Asia because of its commendable growth in economics, political and armed forces. She didn't make any compromises when internal disputes had started arising in the country. She had taken all the necessary steps to counter the problems inside India. She called for an emergency to resolve the unstable situation in the country. Though the step of calling an emergency was a matter of dispute as always she stood firm with her decision. Unfortunately, on 31st October 1984, she was assassinated.

Mother Teresa
'Caring' is the word that best describes the personality like Mother Teresa. Mother Teresa was born on 26th August 1910 in Skopje, Macedonia (FYROM). At the age of 12, she chose to lead a religious life. She left home at the age of 18 and joined Sisters of Loreto in Ireland. After a year she moved to India and started as a teacher for almost 20 years. She felt with her experience that she needed to commit her life to serve the poor. This thought led to the establishment of Missionaries of Charity, an organization which is currently existing in 133 countries with a motto to help the 'poor and sick'. It cares for those who include refugees, prostitutes, lepers, abandoned children, sick and mentally sick children, the aged and many more recuperating people. Mother Teresa was awarded many awards such as Nobel Prize for peace, the Bharat Ratna, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and many more. This great lady died on 5th September 1997.

Kalpana Chawla 
Kalpana Chawla, a role model for many Indian women, was born on 17th March 1961. The mystery of sky, stars and space used to attract her and this led her to become the first Indian woman Astronaut.
Post completion of her school, Kalpana took admission in Aeronautical Engineering course at Punjab Engineering College at Chandigarh. But she realized that that is not enough to reach the space and decided to move to the United States to obtain a degree in Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Texas. She achieved the doctorate in aerospace engineering from the University of Colorado.

Kalpana started working with NASA Ames Research Center in 1988 and later joined the Corps after she became the citizen of US. She got her first opportunity to fly on Space Shuttle Columbia in 1997. Kalpana was included in the six-member crew. Kalpana was again selected for her second flight of STS-107. The mission launched in 2003 after being delayed for so many reasons. The mission was successful but while returning back on 1st February 2003, the shuttle splintered into pieces and Kalpana Chawla died with other crew members of the shuttle.

Kiran Bedi
A woman with firmness, a woman with courage, a woman with determination is called Kiran Bedi. She is a retired IPS officer. Kiran Bedi has been an inspiration for the women in India. Kiran Bedi was born in Amritsar on 9th June 1949. She completed her Ph.D. in Social Science from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. Her topic was 'Drug Abuse and Domestic Violence'. She was popular as a social activist. Kiran Bedi was the first woman IPS of India. She depicted the determination of joining IPS as a woman where the career path was completely male-dominated.

Kiran Bedi served in New Delhi Traffic, she took the challenge of being the Deputy Inspector General of Police in Mizoram and also had served as an Advisor to the Lieutenant Governor of Chandigarh. She took very important decisions when she was the Director General of Narcotics Control Bureau. During the tenure in Tihar Jail as Inspector General, she initiated a lot of programmes for the prisoners such as detoxification, yoga, literacy etc. She has received a number of awards including President Gallantry Award, Pride of Indian Award, FICCI Award, Public Service Excellence Award, Woman of the Year Award and many more. She took voluntary retirement in 2007 after serving as the Director General of India’s Bureau of Police Research and Development.

Mary Com
Mary Com, a name which is called with pride in India. A name of fulfilling dreams for the women of becoming a successful sportswoman. Mary Com, an Indian boxer, is a champion of five times in World Amateur Boxing. She has won medals in all the world championships. Her achievements did not make her feel extraordinary and still, she enjoys a humble lifestyle with her family. 

Mary Kom has proved the people wrong who had the mindset that women cannot live their dreams without sacrificing their families. She has taught all the women in the country that if someone has dreams then the sky is the limit. Her bravery, simplicity and a fire inside had helped her to reach new heights.
